How Often Should You Really Deep Clean Each Room?

By Karin Eagle Smith  ·  Surprise, AZ  ·  25 Years Experience

People ask me this more than almost anything else. My answer is always the same: more often than you think, less often than you fear. After 25 years keeping homes in Surprise and the West Valley looking their best, here is the honest schedule I've developed — room by room, with the Arizona-specific factors most people don't account for.

The Kitchen

Countertops, stovetop, and sink: weekly, minimum. But the inside of the microwave, the grease buildup behind the stove, the refrigerator coils underneath, and the oven interior — these need a real clean once a month if you cook regularly, quarterly if you don't.

In the desert, kitchen grease combines with fine dust that comes through windows and vents and creates a film that weekly wiping doesn't touch. You won't see it building — until one day you run your hand over the range hood and realize what's been accumulating.

Bathrooms

Toilet, sink, mirror: weekly. But grout lines, shower door tracks, the base of the toilet, under the vanity, and tile surfaces need a proper scrub once a quarter.

Hard water is the enemy in the West Valley. Our water leaves calcium deposits on chrome, glass, and tile that become genuinely difficult to remove if left more than three months. Treat it quarterly and it comes off easily. Leave it for a year and you're grinding.

Bedrooms

Change sheets every two weeks. Surface dusting and vacuuming bi-weekly. But a true deep clean — washing the duvet or comforter, cleaning under the bed, wiping ceiling fan blades, cleaning window sills, and rotating the mattress — happens seasonally, four times a year.

Most people do this once a year at most. The difference in air quality and sleep quality is noticeable when you do it right.

Living Areas

Regular vacuuming and surface dusting weekly. But moving furniture to clean underneath, washing throw pillow covers, wiping walls around light switches and door frames (which collect hand oils and marks invisibly over time), and thorough baseboard cleaning — that's a quarterly job.

Windows

Every three months, minimum, in Arizona. Our windows get hit with monsoon residue, desert pollen, dust storms, and hard water from sprinkler systems. Clean windows let in dramatically more light and make every room feel fresher. Inside and outside, every season. It is not optional in this climate.

The honest truth? Most people do none of this on schedule because life gets in the way. That's not a character flaw — it's just reality. Having someone reliable handle it on a regular schedule means your home is always genuinely clean, not just surface-clean between crises.
